That's okay, a lot of the indigenous "traditions" of today are modern reactions to Japanese and ROC ethnic policies as well as economic pressures. Many of the costumes and practices of Taiwanese Aborigines are as traditional as the Sun Jacket is to Han people. The sensationalism in the picture is fantastic and very much in line with the world of the popular Ripley's Believe it or Not column that was popular at the time.
