Sorry about the lack of links last week! Got busy.... What's stirring on the blogs today?
MEDIA: The Nation has an excellent piece on China that also provides the Establishment view of Taiwan as a Toddler. It also shows that the US Establishment just wants Taiwan to go away so it can make money and more money. A-gu points me to this wonderful piece from Brookings on Taiwan's democracy. Democracy isn't a problem, folks -- it's the solution. A China Brief piece from the conservative Jamestown Foundation notes that Hu may have sounded peaceful on Taiwan, but he struck another note on the miiltary. That's Impossible! has the Small Party News. He also blogs on the referendum moves by the CEC to prevent the kind of bullshit the KMT pulled in the '04 election to keep people from voting on the referendum, and offers an analysis of Ma Ying-jeou's position on cross strait relations: smoke and mirrors. Chen Chi-li, the Bamboo Union gang leader who just died, is the object of a commentary by Taiwan Echo on the KMT's use of gangs to carry out political assassinations. The KMT's evisceration of the defense allocation for the new missiles shows the KMT's true allegiance, says J Michael. David posts on the opening of a Taiwan YouTube. Ni Howdy has the lowdown on the baseball games being hosted in Taichung and the NEW COSTCO. Yeaaaaaaaa! Scott blogs on mass education in Taiwan. Everyone knows that Hu Jintao's "peace offer" was unmitigated bullshit. Like San Bei ji, for example. So where's the media piece on that? Jake rants about Asians cheating on the GRE. Islaformosa discusses the decline of baseball in Taiwan. J Michael strikes again with the national day parade, images and commentary. The Real Taiwan, which always has live music links and news, takes a trip to salt mountain. Kerim has a great post about ivory tower vs. real world. ROC the Boat finds AP does a good job. Elliot has a great view of Jim Mann's The China Fantasy. Talking Taiwanese on Trilingual education.

smoke and mirrors link leads to google reader sir. Thanks for the links though!
Lei tea is hard to make! I went to Old Hukou to do it last time but I gave up lol

I pointed out to J Michael that the HF-IIE budget was not blocked. One KMT legislator suggested cutting it all, which was not supported by either the DPP or KMT.
After discussions 1/3 of the budget was cut, 1/3 was frozen and 1/3 approved. So although they won't be made in large numbers next year, production will start and the project will keep moving forward.
Regarding wherejakewent's post on GREs and cheating, entitled "
Asians cheat on the GRE. All of them."
It's a racist, ignorant pile of manure and doesn't deserve to be linked to a great blog like this. I can't imagine many educated people are reading his drivel, so I'll post my response here as well.

I find your post, and it's title, totally and completely offensive. Your claim seems to be that every single Asian student cheats on the GRE. Your evidence, if I'm not mistaken, is that the students YOU know at YOUR school admitted this. Therefore you can criticize all of ASIAN morality. Nice.
I'm Taiwanese myself, and I just took the GREs. I took no prep course and obtained a 680V, 740M. But according to you, all Asians are lousy people and cheaters. Thanks.
Your comment is racist and poorly thought out. Do some people cheat on tests in Taiwan or other Asian countries? Yes, probably. Do all? Absolutely not, your narrow-minded jerk. Don't make blanket comments about entire countries, no: entire RACES without any evidence.
It's not wrong to be angry that some students are cheating, and even barefaced enough to admit it. It is totally wrong, disgusting, racist and offensive to make that a categorical statement about me, my country and my entire race.
I disagree. The gentleman's postulation has grounds.
My experience is not limited in scope. One could say my sampling is a function of exposure in Belgium, United Kingdom, France and the United States.
Pretty thorough sampling. It is representative hence asians cheat. Yes i said it. What? Going to play a race card here like you did previously? Shan't work. I'm black!
