Linda Arrigo on Kaohsiung Incident

Jerome Keating, who writes with great insight on Taiwan, passed along this notification of a presentation by longtime Taiwan independence stalwart, democracy activist, and general Taiwan expat Linda Arrigo:

To all,

I wish to share something that some of you may be interested in attending.

This coming Wednesday, January 25, from 5pm--6:30 pm,
Linda Gail Arrigo one of our members will be making a presentation on the background and happening of the Kaohsiung Incident (1979); it will be given at the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.

The address is #4, Alley 17, Lane 147
Hsinyi Road Section 3
Phone 2708-0100

As many of you would know, the Kaohsiung Incident proved pivotal in the bringing about of demcracy in Taiwan; after it the abuses of Taiwan's martial law could no longer be hidden from the outside world. Most of the participants--many of whom ended up in jail--became founding members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Linda was a first hand participant and as close to the sources and planning and resultant crackdown as you can get. It will be an informative presentation on this period of history and a good chance to ask questions of interest.

If you wish to attend, let me know as I need to give them a rough head count on how many will be coming.

Jerome

Dr. Keating wanted to stress: if you want to go, PLEASE notify him so they can get a rough head count. His email is jkeating AT ms67.hinet.net

Hmm... sorry I'll not be there. I'd be interested to hear what she has to say. Someone should ask her about Bruce Jacobs' involvement.
