Look mate, I live in Beijing, and I have blogged about this specific issue (click on my name to see my blog.)
For one thing, I feel the need to point out that no newspaper was closed. What happened is that the journalists of Nanfang Zhoumo (Southern Weekly), the most liberal and independent newspaper in mainland China, went on strike to complain about how Guangdong's propaganda department completely butchered their new year editorial, and then had the newspaper publish it without giving them the chance to even take a look.
Secondly, if I were you I wouldn't hold my breath. Most of my Chinese acquaintances here in Beijing don't even know or care about the whole Southern Weekly issue, and the media has barely reported on it.
As you say, you live in Beijing. Meanwhile, there are the pictures.
