Hot Pot Time

The other day it was hot pot time. Yum. Here we contemplate some golden needle mushrooms.

We stopped by the table at the local market where all sorts of goodies are sold.

You tofu, really great in hot pots.

We don't put these in our hot pots.

A world full of unfamiliar objects.

These were probably dried on someone's sidewalk or pavement.

We don't use these either.

Eggs, bacon, and....

..."salad dressing", or mayo. Because no meal is complete without a healthy dose of mayo squeezed across it.

Five flavor peanuts. I seldom buy peanuts, the bag rarely makes it to the end of the day, my wife and eat them like candy.

This wasn't in our hot pot either.

Mushrooms and.... what?

Meatballs. A must in every hot pot.

Good on the side, but not in the pot.

It's kind of like a supermarket in miniature.

Not for the hot pot.

How would I prepare this? Hmmm....

Stewed eggs, tofu skin spring rolls, and other goodies.

Alas, shellfish are a common illegal import from China in local markets, filled with deadly chemicals. We avoid them.

This kind of soft tofu is really delicious.

Fungus among us.

Good, but not in our hot pot.

Traditional tofu. A staple of our hot pots.

What sauce would be complete without these?

Not for sale!

A watched pot does in fact boil, contrary to popular misconception.

Bizarre Foods Taiwan

Kudos to Andrew Zimmern of the Travel Channel for his wonderful presentation of Taiwan on the Bizarre Foods: Taiwan episode. Not only is the episode sympathetic and funny, he also refers to us as an independent nation." Go Andrew!

This link will take you to the excellent show posted on YouTube (in several parts). (hat tip to MJ). There's a slide show of stills from the episode here.

The Buffet Place

The buffet place. There's one on every corner selling simple food at good prices. Come to the place where everyone eats lunch....

Taking aim at the dishes.

Who doesn't love fatty pork?

Above, up close and personal.

Large Chinese sausage slices.

Broccoli. Simple but delicious.

Deep fried and sauced: it's how meat should be.

I love eggplant.

Because you can never have too many fried foods.

Chicken.

A popular bean dish.

Pork.

Mashed taro topped with Taiwan's favorite condiment.

Various boiled chicken dishes are a common sight.

Egg, tofu, or radish is often made into cakes like this. Here it is egg.

The lowly pork chop is Taiwan's staple food.

Cuttlefish.

Fish slices.

Little fish are a great favorite of the locals.

Preserved egg with tofu, a ubiquitous side dish.

Traditional Chinese McNuggets.

Deep fried and stuff with seafood.

Boiled pork, sliced and sauced.

Bonito flakes atop bean sprouts.

Eggs are another staple of local cuisine.

Cod or one of several substitute fish.

The diversity of fungi available in Taiwan is always amazing.

Tofu skins, one of my favorites.

Bean thread noodles.

Stewed fatty pork.

Calgary apples? No, just squid balls.

Taiwan style meatloaf.

Fried chicken, an Asian favorite.

Seaweed.

A small cooking area for deep frying.

Don't forget the free soup!

When you're done, the leftovers go into the recycler for pig slops, and the dishes and chopsticks into the trash for recycling.
