- Big story of the week. Vatican asks two bishops in China to step aside for Communist Party appointed candidates. NYT on the deal, from Ian Johnson. Cardinal Zen critical of Church decision, says it is selling the Church out. Catholic Herald on the story. This story will probably trigger a new round of fears that the Vatican will cut ties and switch to China.

- Brian H with a solid analysis of the KMT, the DPP, and irrigation associations. Will the DPP attempt to insert itself into the top of the patronage networks and run a clientelist state like the KMT? Or will genuine political change occur? My bet is on the former. In the Chen Administration the DPP tried but failed to replace the KMT at the top of these associations. Now with control of the legislature, it simply has to pass laws.
