An undersea search led by an eminent French archaeologist yesterday turned up dozens of scraps of china and pottery in the harbor of Makung, capital of Penghu (the Pescadores), but did not find a ship that's believed to have sunk there a long time ago. Dr. Massy Jean-Luc was invited by the Republic of China's National Center for Research and Preservation of Cultural Properties to conduct an underwater exploration in the harbor of Makung, the site of a reported historical shipwreck.
Sadly, the article points up Taiwan's inability to protect its underwater resources:
A local expert said a search he and some archaeologists conducted last year in that place found some pots commonly used in the late Ming Dynasty. He suggested at that time that the authorities concerned act promptly to collect them.
The pots have disappeared, he said, pointing out that this is a loss to archaeological and cultural circles.
