In 2000, the narrative was (still is?) that Lee Teng-hui chose Lien Chan as the KMT candidate for the 2000 election because he knew Lien couldn't win, and this was a dirty trick on the KMT to make them lose. I remember asking in 2004, "OK, who tricked the KMT *this* time?"
That is a question that I didn't think I would ever have to ask again. And yet here we are.
Karl, very similar conspiracy had the DPP working with the CCP to undermine the ROC, the theory goes the co conspirator DPP is provoking Taiwanese independence in order to give the CCP an excuse to invade Taiwan.
Biggest question in my mind is, have they offered enough to Wang Jyn-ping to keep him on-side, or is he going to jump ship at some opportune moment. I think it's Wang could emerge as leader of the KMT if they lose the next election in a landslide (which looks almost inevitable now), if there's enough of a localized faction left by then.
It's an interesting question. Wang could emerge as leader of Taiwan factions politician and then nativize the KMT. But... what will the KMTers like Hung do? We're about to witness a struggle...
I keep hearing how much the party coffers have been depleted these last few election cycles and how little is coming in to replenish the treasure chest. Wang already is the leader of the local faction, but after the next big loss in January there might not be much left to fight over beyond the name and bragging rights. My hope is that the Chinese at the core of the party will decamp from Taiwan and head home, and that their leftover supporters follow them.
One thing Hung reminds me of, other than "Obassa" schoolteachers, is my suggestion a few years ago to abolish the nationality requirement of candidates standing in elections for public office: Chinese candidates standing on a direct platform of annexation would get tonked. It would also open up the field to a wider pool of potential candidates. It could be that you might find a Japanese or Canadian (or whatever) candidate to be a more competent or at least less corrupt mayor for example than a local candidate.
Ian, the Taipei Times has an article on party assets and income/spending: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2015/07/20/2003623471
The KMT is running a large deficit (US$40 million last year??), but still has at least 20 years of assets at its current burn rate (US$814 million). The burn rate is probably higher than it would be most years. Not sure why that article gives two different figures for the DPP’s assets.
My CT: The deep blue Taiwan sellouts know the party is over. Since they have the keys and account numbers to all the assets, they are intentionally sabotaging the election so they can walk away with the loot during the meltdown.
I'd like to see the DPP take control of the LY. Change the constitution, retrieve what state assets they can from the Kmt, find out who the KMT murderers were in the 70s/80s, get rid of the 18% interest for .gov workers, teachers, soldiers, stop wasting money on distant territories that aren't the ROCs to begin with, let Kimen and Matsu decide for themselves their futures, pass a law that if retired military officers move to china, they forfeit their pension, etc. etc. etc.

Not a single Taiwanese in this photo. Only Chinese lords.

Hoorah! I eagerly await her new ideological initiatives.
