Japan warms to Taiwan, isolates China in island dispute.
"Japan is ready to open a contested tract of the East China Sea to fishing boats from Taiwan, officials in Taipei say, ..."
Taiwan says but I don't think Japan has said.
"Japan, the world’s No. 3 economy, wants better relations with No. 2 China but is locked in the islet dispute and a list of others stemming from the World War II era."
What does "list of others" mean?
China's claims stems from discovery of oil/gas, not WW2.
"China will keep quiet on the Taiwan-Japan deal in the works as not to upset Taiwan, which it hopes will side with Beijing in the sea dispute, Mr. King says."
China doesn't want to upset Taiwan??!!
Taiwan's actions are supporting China in this matter.
"Taiwanese fishing boats traditionally trawl in waters near the disputed islets, which are 222 km (138 miles) from home."
B.S. If there is any record of Taiwan using these islands Taiwan should publish it.
"Taiwan wants clear boundaries for an expanded fishing area, the foreign minister said."
And how would this help Japan?
Taiwan will still claim the islands, Taiwan fishing boats and Taiwan coast guard will still enter Japanese waters. Maybe the Japanese government is so stupid but I hope it isn't.
"... and to maintain its reasonably good relations with Taiwan ..."
Yes, except for this matter they do have good relations.

Taiwan WBC team forms circle on pitcher's mound after loss to Japan, bows deeply in thanks to Japanese fans who were holding up hundreds of placards reading "Thank You Taiwan!"
""Japan, the world’s No. 3 economy, wants better relations with No. 2 China but is locked in the islet dispute and a list of others stemming from the World War II era."
What does "list of others" mean?"
"List of others" means the Takeshima/Dokdo dispute with South Korea and the Northern Territories issue with Russia.
