Hitler Envoy to Arrive in Czechoslovakia

"Obligations of Anacreon to the Empire: None!" "Powers of the Empire over Anacreon: None!"

Max Hirsch of Kyodo reports on the only light side to the somber news of the arrival of Beijing's envoy Chen Yun-lin in Taiwan...eggs in the face for the envoy...

A Taiwanese pro-independence group promised Saturday a reward of up to US$300 to anybody who can hit top Chinese envoy Chen Yunlin in the face with an egg during Chen's landmark trip to Taiwan, part of a slew of protest activities planned for Chen's visit.

Chen, who directs Beijing's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), will lead Monday a delegation of Chinese officials to Taipei for the highest-level meeting ever on the island between historic rivals Taipei and Beijing.

....

Despite a revival of bilateral talks as part of thawing cross-strait ties, broad swaths of the public oppose Chen's visit, which they see as kowtowing to Beijing by Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou.

Leading that charge is the Northern Taiwan Society, a group of political activists who vowed to launch eggings on Chen amid what the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said would be large-scale protests in Taipei during Chen's stay. ''Since China targets Taiwan with 1,200 missiles, we will target Chen with 1,200 eggs,'' Society vice chairwoman Michelle Wang said by phone.

The Taipei Times reported on the itinerary:

The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) yesterday announced a rough itinerary for Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) Chairman Chen Yunlin’s (陳雲林) visit to Taipei, setting his meeting with SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung (江丙坤) for Tuesday. The SEF, however, declined to reveal the details of President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) meeting with Chen, saying that the meeting was still being planned by the National Security Bureau and the SEF. It said it would make the details public as soon as they were finalized.

It is possible that the Ma-Chen meeting will take place on Thursday, as Chen does not have any public events lined up for that afternoon, but Chiang refused to confirm this.

It also said that Lien Chan would formally accept the two pandas from Beijing on Thursday. Lien has been appointed Taiwan's rep to the ASEAN meeting this year.

The world at large is pleased that finally both China and Taiwan are taking a positive step to resolve any differences between them through peaceful negotiation. Of course in any society or nation, there exists some minorities who have no concrete ideas or plans to come up with better alternatives other than destructing the good works of others. For the sake of the majority, we welcome the peaceful talk.

We readily admit that the outcome may not pleased anyone but then for win-win result, there is no loser but winners for all.

To those mischief-maker (include this website), let us throw and feed them to the crocodiles.

"but then for win-win result, there is no loser but winners for all."

Unfortunately, most Chinese haven't gotten used to the fact that the majority of Taiwan does not see this as a "win-win" situation and does not believe that this represents "good works".

"let us throw and feed them to the crocodiles."

Can we cream your face with eggs first? That might be fun! What's good enough for China's envoy is certainly good enough for you ;).

I doubt the protesters will be able to get close enough to get a good shot.

I am glad to see you will make a good fit... in the KMT/CCPs future plans for Taiwan's democratic society.

May I also suggest gulag style "re-education" centers, Green Island, mass executions in the old race track and an elaborate system of shared accountability that will block all family members and close associates from economic mobility... unless they turn in any potential "democracy-roaders" and advocates of a "free Taiwan." Black lists are great to, so if they sneak out of the country they can remain abroad.

It's worked before

No "Straits Eggschange" punnage? I'm disappointed, Michael!

The egg throwing protest is a play on the Chinese word for missile. It sounds very similar to Flying Egg in Chinese.

飛彈
fēi dàn
ㄈㄟ ㄉㄢˋ
Missile

飛蛋
fēi dàn
ㄈㄟ ㄉㄢˋ
Flying egg

@Huangman

"peaceful negotiation"
How can there be any peaceful negotiation if one participant is literally holding a gun to the other's head?

"To those mischief-maker (include this website), let us throw and feed them to the crocodiles."

The real mischief-maker is the aggressor (with its 1200 missiles) and their apologists.... you?

Kang Wei, thanks man! I didn't even catch that one!

Naruwan, it's Cox's fault, he kept me in a state of impaired sobriety the whole weekend, couldn't even pun straight!

Has Reuters seen the light? This is a surprisingly balanced account, if a bit simplistic.

You're free to oppose negotiations or their result, but I don't think the Hitler/Czechoslovakia comparison is fair. North Korea/South Korea, Southern Song/Northern Song, Confederacy/Union are more accurate and a lot less inflammatory.

take that back, change Northern Song to Xi Xia and Bei Liao

Came across a story from CNN today...

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/11/03/taiwan.china/?iref=mpstoryview

...and was suprised to find the following quote:

"The mission is clear and well-defined," Chen said. "No political issues pertaining to cross-Straits relations will be involved, nor will Taiwan's internal political affairs."

Huh? Is this a mis-translation? There's something really weird going on with this quote here. The use of the word "internal" is consistent with China's kneejerk diplomatic statement to any criticism of how Taiwan, Tibet, or Xinjiang are treated, which basically goes something like "this is an internal matter so you have no right to commment." Does anyone else find it really odd and contradictory that Chen is applying this kind of language to Taiwan? Maybe it's some sort of conciliatory gesture, but that wouldn't make much sense: why would you give a conciliatory statement that essentially describes Taiwan as "not a part of" China?

Does anyone know what the original Chinese quote was?

Sobriety is its own pun-ishment....;)

Taiwan is a souverign nation. It needs to act like it is. Which includes requiring its populace to respect its laws.

Mmmm...New York Strip...I have not forgotten.

From the city of civility...and stupid civil office holders.
(But our Mayor is a good guy)

For the sake of the majority ....

buzzzzzt - wrong. The majority have spoken - they want freedom from the governance of the CCP. This was one of Ma's promises and one of the reasons why people elected him.

If the mischief-making KMT keeps pushing their secret agenda, the majority will stand up and put the KMT in their rightful place. (the grave).

Well, it is true that Hu hasn't yet reached Hitler's score....

....none of those comparisons are apt, because Taiwan/China is not a case of a split country.
