I remember having 2 honours in life when I was a high school student.
1. Having a Count Basie Orchestra singer /sax player (from the beebop age), Vernon Issacs playing "Let the Good Times Roll" with our Jazz band.
2. Watching Dizzie Gillespie from 10 feet away playing with the 80's edition of the Count Basie Orchestra in Ottawa.
Two of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Do they have, you know, actual jazz?
Favorite Jazz moments? Wow, too numerable to recount them all but here are a few of my favorites:
1. Sitting at a bar about 5 feet away from Victor Wooten who was playing bass in an impromptu jam session at a small and nearly empty bar in Columbus, OH. WOW!!!
2. Watching Allan Holdsworth play a show at small club and then drinking a few beers at the bar and chatting about guitar with him afterwards (Columbus, OH).
3. Standing about 10 feet from Stanley Jordan the finger tapping guitar wizard, who was then virtually unknown, at a small club in Cleveland, OH. Amazing.....
4. Driving alongside a limo on the highway in Cleveland, OH and glancing over to see jazz guitarist Larry Coryell (who had played a show the night before) peering out the window and exchanging waves.
5. Sitting in the front row of an auditorium at Ohio State University listening to Frank Zappa shock the classical music world while delivering the keynote speech to the American Society of University Composers - and then wandering into a small meeting room backstage afterward to listen to him do interviews..... (Zappa was equally at home with jazz, classical, and rock......)
Jazz is the ultimate.
