In November, the CCCT is pleased to present a presentation from Canadian John Groot on navigating cultural differences while doing business in Taiwan.

When one is from the West and still relatively new to Taiwan, there are a wealth of cultural differences in communication and business style that are often invisible or mysterious. Recognizing and managing them can help you make and execute plans with employees, customers, partners or coworkers with less conflict and more certainty of success.

Some of these factors include the concept of “Face” and how it permeates daily life, indirect vs. direct communication, the supreme value of relationships in Taiwan and how to use this to your advantage, the Taiwanese concept of manager/worker relations, and differences in expectations regarding initiative and creativity, efficiency, and contracts and agreements.

The framework for this 2-hour workshop is twofold:

1) To invite experienced businesspeople to share their experiences and insights with newer expatriates.
2) To explain some basic concepts of Intercultural Communication theory, and localize them to Taiwan.

Participants can discuss the presented concepts and cases, and share their own experiences and ideas to help develop more positive and effective strategies to doing business in this cultural milieu.
