Call For Papers: Tainan Area Studies: Society and Daily Life in the Tainan Region

Still taking a couple of days off, but I thought I'd forward this.

Dear Colleagues,

This message is a call for papers for the 4th International Conference on Tainan Area Studies, entitled "Society and Daily Life in the Tainan Region," co-organized by the Nanying International Center for Tainan Area Humanities and Social Sciences Research and the National Museum of Taiwan History, based in Tainan.

The conference will be held October 18-19, 2014. Abstracts should be send before April 30, 2014. The deadline for sending the final papers is September 30, 2014.

Call for Papers
International Conference on Tainan Area Studies
“Society and daily life in the Tainan Region”
October 18 – 19, 2014

The Tainan region used to be the political and economic center of Taiwan. People living in Tainan developed unique lifestyles, customs, beliefs, and ideologies. This conference will discuss the daily life, social relationships, and connections between various ethnic groups and organizations in this region. Through this conference, we hope to explore the distinctive lifestyle and local culture of the Tainan Region. Furthermore, emphasis will be given on the comparative analysis and methodology of trans-regional studies.

1.      Sessions’ topics

The main theme of this conference is social relationships and daily life in the Tainan region. The following issues will be considered:

a. Daily life: Changes in food, clothing, housing, traffic, education, and entertainment…
b. Relationships and community: How do Tainan people participate in the religious, political, social and entertainment organizations? How are the relationships between individuals or between families maintained?  How do these relationships influence on social life?
c. Changes in social enlightenment, life spaces, daily customs, and life concepts: The discussion includes the movements of Taiwanization, comprehensive community building, village revitalization society under Japanese rule, local education, etc. How these movements influence the regulations and changes of daily customs, life spaces, and life concepts in the Tainan Region will be considered.
d. Others: Discussion on the comparative analysis and methodology of trans-regional studies regarding the analysis of daily life.

Dates: October 18-19, 2014 (Saturday and Sunday)
Venue: National Museum of Taiwan History,  No. 250, Sec 1, Changhe Rd., Annan District, Tainan City 70946, Taiwan

3. Abstract submission due
April 30, 2014

4. Paper submission due
September 30, 2014

5. Submission process
Please follow these guidelines as you prepare your proposal and papers:
l  Please submit a tentative paper title and a 500-word abstract, as well as a copy of your curriculum vitae.
l  The languages of the conference will be English and Chinese. Abstracts and paper can be written in either English or Chinese.

6. Financial Support
Paper presenters are eligible for a grant covering travel costs and living expense during the conference.
