  1. I don't have a WordPress account, nor do I particularly want one (can't comment on that blog without it) - does Hear in Taiwan or anyone else have any info on the address of that store?

  2. "The National Review with a strange article by J Nordlinger on Taiwan, pt 1. With so many experienced commentators, reporters, and writers on the island, why do foreign mags send out people for pieces like this?"

Nordlinger frequently writes travel blogs where he comments on various things without going into any depth. He's not treating Taiwan any differently than he treats other places he's visited.

I do wish though that he would drop the "Taiwan is Free China" routine. I've written to him about it a couple times, and I've commented on his articles when he's made the mistake.

He seems to be doing better this time. Although he says at the end "This is what China — all of China — could have had", in the rest of the article he refrains from calling the Taiwanese "Chinese". He even avoids saying something like "Taiwan proves that Chinese culture can have democracy" and instead says Taiwan proves democracy is compatible with Asian values. This is progress :)

I did comment on TVFT a week or two ago that convservatives have their own problems with Taiwan - tending to view it through cold war lenses. Perhaps Nordlinger is having a second look. I hope he gets outside the capital to visit Taichung and Tainan.
