  2. thanks a lot for the link to the bloomberg article!
i believe the situation is quite similar among german "sinologists". in general they tend to be very apologetic of the prc for various reasons, among them fear of not getting a visa or endangering cooperation and funding from china. i was shocked that there was not a single event at any department or an article by a chinese studies guy in 2009 commemorating the 20th anniversary of the tiananmen massacre, nothing on liu xiaobo and on the ai weiwei affairs. the largest daily in germany even wrote a piece on the "silence of the sinologists"... the critical attitude towards china of the quality german media is even critcised by the sinologists. they argue effectively only they understand china and thus could criticise it, what they of course don't do. worse is the growing dependency on chinese money either through the confucian institutes or sponsored professorships. the prestigious university of goettingen has a new chair in chinese studies and chinese language learning which is sponsored by the chinese government!!! the new head of chinese studies prof axel schneider (a selfdeclared friend of taiwan - he studied there, wrote books about it and his wife is from there, although i feel that he is maybe pro roc) has no problem with this but proudly welcomes the cooperation with the prc. good that people like holz or dikotter are still around.

  4. Michael, did you see the description at the end of the video on HuffPost? It says:
    - - -
Time lapse shot from Taipei Tower in China
    - - -

How "nice" is that video now?

  6. Hi Tim, Chris Anderson will communicate with their webmaster and correct the video label accordingly. Thanks again for spotting that:)

  7. Hi, Joyce. Please find out how such an "error" is possible. I use the scare quotes because many people purposely try to make people believe that Taiwan is part of China.

  10. Finally, the description at the end of the video on HuffPost now says:
    - - -
    Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan
    - - -

The AOL page where it's hosted, however, still has the wrong description:
    - - -
    Taipei Tower in China
    - - -

    Ugh!
