Chen Shui-bian was found NOT GUILTY of taking bribes in the merger cases and of laundering the money. As was his wife. AP has the judge's ruling:
"No evidence." Does this mean that Chen is getting his houses back? The Taipei District Court said in its ruling Friday there was no evidence showing Chen took 600 million New Taiwan dollars ($20 million) in exchange for promises not to block the bankers' separate merger initiatives.
Executives of Cathay Bank and Yuanta Securities Co. claim the money was political donations. They also were acquitted of bribery charges in the case.

- An Indian writer on Taiwan nails it well: Worries that Taiwan is not reaping the due dividends of its "democracy advantage" also extend to the younger generation's confused approach to nationhood in a political milieu where the current government of President Ma Ying-jeou is promoting all-out economic and cultural integration with the mainland. In numerous exchanges with Taiwanese students, I observed that they did not view democracy as a cherished trait or a basis for constructing the national self, defined against the mainland Chinese "other".

are the Chen's going to get their money back that was seized?
ReplyDeleteAt least the MOE is now only suggesting that NTU moderate the forums. Remember back in 2005 when the MOE unnder the DPP ordered schools to remove all references to China or Chinese in school names? Thankfully, the MOE backed down when the KMT threatened to cut off its funding. I agree the MOE shouldn't be involved in politics, but that should apply to all political pursuasions.
ReplyDeleteAbian not guilty? How could this be? Isn't it true that the KMT and Ma controls the courts!
ReplyDeleteLike that music vid a lot. I'll bet that rapper "army" will make some people feel uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteThe V sign is also something different as a political prop. It reminds me of the movie "Vendetta", and also the sci-fi TV series "V" in which the letter was a rebel symbol against alien invaders who appeared human, but were actually human-devouring space lizards. No actual analogy intended here. Just saying.

In it, Chen Chih-chung is reported saying he did not understand the US government's "leap in thinking."...
Leap in thinking, leap in thinking, leap... out of the twilight zone, Chen Junior.
“There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition.” From "The Twilight Zone".
And,
“It may be said with a degree of assurance that not everything that meets the eye is as it appears.” Quoted from "The Twilight Zone" producer and screenwritter, Rod Sterling.
