I saw this ad overlooking a major street intersection in Taichung. It advertises the merits of the current KMT Mayor of Taichung, Jason Hu (胡志強), punning on his name in Chinese: Who is 胡? Normally I post all the ads at the end of each month, but this one was so awesome in its weird English I though it deserved a post all its own. Enjoy.

That is funny. The same slogan is used by Taiwanese American groups to protest China's president Hu Jin Tao, with the implication that he remains a mysterious figure of dubious motives.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! And a good question too; who is Hu?
ReplyDeleteConsidering he professes to have attended Oxford, he must get a chuckle if not a cringe when he sees this.
But ... and appropriate question considering the happenings during the past weeks.
The most famous Hu of all, 胡锦涛, that's who.
ReplyDeleteJason Hu has merits? Wow, learn something new every day. :)
ReplyDeleteRight! "Who is who?"
ReplyDeleteI can't distinguish between the police, the politicians, and the gangsters in this city!
Therefore, great job (with the ad), Jason Hu!

The sign really doesn't say much about his accomplishments, other than somehow implying he built the structure at the building during the Japanese era.
ReplyDeleteThe slogan should say... Hu, he Who should resign!
ReplyDeletewtf!? i totally dont get it, good job whichever brainiac that came up with this ad, you beauty!
ReplyDeletetaichungers time to wake up and kick this son of a b out of office, cast your vote for a future in TAIWAN, to hell with china.
I have to admit, it is better than "Let Taipei Surpass Taipei".
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely creepy.
ReplyDeleteSo, who's on first?
ReplyDeleteI can't distinguish between the police, the politicians, and the gangsters in this city!
ReplyDelete@MD, so true. It just sickens me to no end when I see important politicians showing up for gangster funerals and weddings.
@Thomas, re: "Let Taipei Surpass Taipei" I know, what a idiotic slogan.
Likewise, the lame "Xinbei" name for Taipei county. Is anyone really going to use that name or is it going to be like the waste of money MA spent on renaming the Taipei city streets a few years ago?
“Attending birthday celebrations of a gang leader’s father, for example, is inappropriate. Police and civil servants should behave more cautiously,” Ma said.
ReplyDelete"behave more cautiously" ... does Ma mean, don't get caught and embarrass us?
What does he think about Hu attending a gang leaders funeral? I guess someone had to send the presidents condolences.
Ha! Ma himself went to the wedding of Yen Ching-piao's son several years ago. What a hypocrite!
ReplyDeleteIn Mandarin, Su's slogan is 「台北超越台北」, which I'd translate as "Building a(n) [new and] improved Taipei."
ReplyDeleteThe original probably sounds better in Mandarin than either my English translation or the more direct translation, "Let Taipei Surpass Taipei."

The answer to answer to our Jeopardy question, "Who took the presents away from Huville" is "Who is Jason Hu, Grinch and Father Anti-Christmas or the best mayor of all time?"
