In his visit to Cornell last week, Chinese ambassador to the U.S. Zhou Wenzhong spoke of China’s peaceful rise. For those wondering why Zhou’s “peaceful” talk included such a forceful attack on Taiwan independence, it might very well be because of one of our alumni. Former President of Taiwan Lee Teng-hui, Ph.D. ’68 has long been a sore spot for Cornell’s relations with China because of his staunch pro-Taiwan independence views. When Lee arrived in the U.S. to speak at Cornell in 1995 against China’s wishes, the result was an international incident.......
