Taiwan International Workers' Association (TIWA) Photo Book

Kerim over at Keywords passed this to me:

+++++++++++++

Dear friends,

I'm sending along a fundraising plea from the Taiwan International Workers' Association.(contact info in this post on their blog). TIWA is the only Taiwanese organization that fights daily for the rights of the 340,000 Southeast Asian migrant workers in Taiwan. Although TIWA has only 3 full-time members and a few volunteers (including me), it is the most effective organization in Taiwan's migrant workers' movement. They help workers negotiate for their rights in disputes with agents and employers, find shelter for workers who have been raped or beaten, arrange legal counsel for workers who need it, pressure the Taiwanese government for more humane labor policies, and organize a wide variety of cultural activities. Their only sources of funding are miniscule grants, speakers' fees, and donations.

TIWA is about to send to press a photography album put together from their migrant workers' photography workshops over the past two years. I've seen the photos; they are very diverse, sometimes funny, sometimes very beautiful, and all thought-provoking. If you can afford to give US$60, it's well worth it. (BTW, the book is going to be a great resource for anyone teaching courses on globalization, labor, contemporary Asia, etc. ) You can check out some of the photos from the 2005 workshop at: [LINK](PDF file with information on how to buy)

Please pass this e-mail on to anyone you know who might be interested.

Thank you!!
