Ma's Sister Meets Powerful Gangster

My friend A-gu over at That's Impossible! blogged on the Ma clan's latest intersection with gangsters: his sister's meeting with Chang An-lo, the White Wolf.

The DPP presidential ticket's camp is blasting the sister of the KMT candidate for allegedly campaigning for him in China. According to a magazine report [in Next], Ma Yi-nan, the elder sister of Ma Ying-jiu, was in China recently, where she met with a prominent gang member to get funds for her brother's campaign. The DPP ticket is calling Ma Yi-nan a secret envoy to the mainland for her brother, and says the Beijing government is facilitating her movements and meetings in an attempt to influence the Taiwanese presidential election. The green camp says the Ma family is highly secretive, and recent events involving family members have shown that the Mas are not as clean cut as they appear.
Chang is not just any gangster, but a longtime KMT supporter with deep and ancient links to the KMT security apparatus during the martial law period (Ma confirmed the meeting took place). I collected some information on Chang in a long post on Taiwan Matters a while back. A number of ruffians from Taiwan have gone to live with the White Wolf in China, including, Tang Yi-shou, the bullet maker for the pan-Blue supporter who shot Chen Shui-bian in 2004. A couple of years ago I wrote:

The China Pst, pro-KMT to the core, is playing coy: the DVD "sent from China" was not sent from just anywhere. Tang the bullet maker has gone to stay with Chang An-lo, one of Taiwan's most prominent gangsters. Tang is yet another example of a criminal in Taiwan, with strong gang connections, released on bail, and easily able to jump bail and leave the country -- to head (where else?) to China. The Post is downplaying the infinity of connections here between the pro-Blue side and Taiwan's underworld. Has Tang been coerced by the police, as he claims, or was his testimony bought and paid for by the Blues? You make the call....

Maddog reminded me in a private email that Chang An-lo is connected to Lin Chen-chieh, that gentleman who beat up a democracy supporter on TV -- and who showed up at Shih Ming-teh's anti-Chen protest and wanted to be his bodyguard (Lin is actually Chairman of Chang An-lo's political party). Wang Lan, who runs the female arm of the Bamboo Union gang, the Phoenix Corps, also volunteered to help bodyguard Shih Ming-teh. These gangsters are all pro-Blue -- Chang has ancient connections to Taiwan's martial law-era security services and was involved in the 1984 murder of writer Henry Liu -- just to keep the dizzying conections coming -- who was once a dinner pal of current PFP Chairman and KMT turncoat James Soong. Shih Ming-teh himself is connected to Chen Yu-hao, the notorious embezzler, who is apparently under the thumb of the Chinese government. Chang and his Bamboo Union gang pals all have China connections as well.
The Taiwanese crime gangs tend to be strongly pro-KMT, and Chang is only the most prominent example.

  2. She met him in a dinner party with tons of other people right? Not person to person. Also, some of the DPP politicians have been accused of playing Mahjong with him, too :). In addition, for the shooting of Chen, did Harry Lee just said that from the bullet projections, the shooter is aiming at.... the person Chen don't really like much conspiracies!? :)?

These been said, I personally don't like organized crimes get into politics. However, saying DPP has absolutely no gangster connection is just lying to yourself. Also, I don't respect Harry Lee as an scientist at all because he seems to be always defending the guilty parties i.e. O.J. and Loony Phil :D.

  3. This is frightening. He's in cahoots with Taiwan's public enemy #1. Creepy. Do (Taiwan) people know about this?

  4. Defending OJ doesn't make Lee any less capable as a scientist, arty. It simply makes him a bit of a whore (serving an "alleged" criminal for money).

As for Ma and his sistah, I think there must be some rule written somewhere that, in order to get involved in politics in Asia, either you, a loved one, a friend or an associate has to have ties with organised crime. I am usually surprised when I hear of someone who is completely clean. Furthermore, I suspect that, seeing as how powerful some of these gangs are in Taiwan and Hong Kong, a certain degree of complicity must be going on between politicians and the crime lords. There must be unspoken bargains all over the place, not to mention spoken ones.

I am the most surprised that people keep up the illusion that Ma is totally clean. He may not be the dirtiest politician out there by far, but he is not exactly spotless. Then again, seeing as how the Taiwanese public that can overlook his days as a student spy, I guess I should not be surprised at all.

  5. Arty, you're distorting things left, right, and center.

First of all, Michael already linked to something showing that Ma Ying-jeou admitted that his sister met with Chang.

Secondly, that "news" about Harry Lee was also debunked by Lee himself. It was a pan-blue media fabrication:
    - - -
Soong said yesterday that recent comments by forensics expert Henry Lee (李昌鈺) regarding the shooting represented a warning signal from the US to Chen that the US could expose the "truth" about the shooting.

Soong was referring to a report by the Chinese-language
China Times on Thursday, which quoted Lee as saying that Lu was the prime target of the shooting.

However, later on Thursday, Judy Cheng (程曉桂), head of the Criminal Investigation Bureau's Forensic Identification Division, quoted Lee as saying that the local media had misinterpreted his comments.

Lee said he could not infer that Lu was the main target of the shooter from traces left at the scene.

    - - -

In fact, here's what it says on page 30 of the "Conclusion & Summary" portion of Henry Lee's report on the shooting (published in November of 2004):
    - - -
[T]his report does not provide answers to the following questions:

    [...]

    7. Intended target. (The intended target(s) can not be determined at this time. However, it is clear that at least one of the projectiles was directly aimed at the Jeep).

    - - -

Thirdly, since Henry Lee was recommended by the KMT, you should disrespect them, too, for making that choice.

Type in Hillary and criminals in google...it is not instant death because we are not stupid. Just because someone has a picture taken with presidents doesn't not mean they know who you are.

I still don't get why the self proclaiming liberals on this blog didn't realize (Cognitive dissonance!?) that Hsieh is using the same tactics that we despite the most in America which will include calling people perverts and Chinese women are cheap (it is on youtube, and it is not a miss-quote).

Defending OJ doesn't make Lee any less capable as a scientist, arty. It simply makes him a bit of a whore (serving an "alleged" criminal for money).

Consider himself is alleged of wrong doing, that's what I am talking about. Maybe next time you should google the news. As a scientist, ethic comes before experimental results because of your peers must be able to trust your words. If the allegation of hiding the evidences against his client is true, how do we know the rest of his results were not made up i.e. see Dalibor Sames at Columbia and that just one of the cases recently (I am not accusing of Dr. Sames or his students of any thing else other than what's been published).

I am the most surprised that people keep up the illusion that Ma is totally clean.

Ma might not be totally clean but I am sure he is cleaner than Hsieh. I think if you ask Hsieh running mate Su, he will probably agree ;). Student spy is an accusation against Ma, and he has denied it. It is the same thing of Hsieh been accused on being a KMT spy during the 1980s. Although, it is kind of funny that Hsieh hasn't said that he was not a spy for KMT in the public (go look at the footages and you will realize he only mention the 1990s but not the 1980s). If Chen is Teflon Chen, then Hsieh has to be dodge ball Hsieh. Although his recent speeches make him more like a bigot than anything else.

  7. I just read that Ma isn't even Taiwan born. He's Chinese. How is he able to even run for president when he's not even a native born Taiwan citizen??

  8. Maddog that's why it is a question "Did Harry Lee just said..." and thank your for you information. The news I am talking about Harry Lee is the Phil Spector case, I don't think that one is a fabrication...at least not the allegation of "Dr. Henry Lee hid or accidentally destroyed a piece of evidence from the scene of actress Lana Clarkson's shooting."

As far as your statement: "First of all, Michael already linked to something showing that Ma Ying-jeou admitted that his sister met with Chang." Did you even read the article? Here is what he said, "I knew my sister solicited support at a campaign event for me, but I wasn't aware she had met Chang. I will ask her to be more careful next time," Ma said yesterday at his campaign headquarters. In addition, it is in a party i.e. the dinner party with tons of people like I mentioned. Who is twisting the fact or you are challenged at reading the article Michael linked.

Hey talk about your fellows questioning why a lot of pro-blues are anonymous? Who are you Tim the Maddog (see you are somehow anonymous, too, got something to hide according to your fellows)?

I just read that Ma isn't even Taiwan born. He's Chinese. How is he able to even run for president when he's not even a native born Taiwan citizen??

He is a native born of Taiwan citizen by blood. Also, citizenship law is more commonly based on bloodline unlike the US which favors birthplaces because we are nation of immigrants. Btw, do you know McCain was born in Panama? Now you should do some researches to see why he can run for the US president.

  9. "If the allegation of hiding the evidences against his client is true"

Now you see, there is the problem. How do you know he hid evidence?

" As a scientist, ethic comes before experimental results because of your peers must be able to trust your words."

This shocks me even more because it is the opposite of science. As a SCIENTIST, experimental evidence ALWAYS trumps ethics. In fact, for a scientist, the data you come up with in your experiment IS the most ethical. It is true. Are you really implying that if a forensic specialist believes in his heart of hearts that an alleged killer committed the crime, but cannot prove it through his science, that he should make a legal judgement? Arty, you would have made a divine Spanish Inquisitor.

And the "alleged" that I used is vital. This is the whole point about using a defense lawyer. You should be able to stand accused without being necessarily guilty (except, it seems, in China and a handful of other places).

"Ma might not be totally clean but I am sure he is cleaner than Hsieh."

My point was that Ma was not totally clean. At least we agree on that. I guess that would make him "Mysterious Ma" to continue the cutsey terminology.

  11. Now you see, there is the problem. How do you know he hid evidence?

    Thomas,

Some google searches will help: I didn't know he hide evidence personally. However, the judge in the L.A. criminal court said he did is that clear for you?

Also, since you probably are not a scientist, I am not going to explain myself. However, mis-read my point on why scientific ethics come before the actual experimental results.

"Mysterious Ma," not bad, I like mysteries.

  12. South Korean president Lee Myung-bak was born in Japan, senator McCain was born in Panama...

...not good examples for pan-greens who want a Taiwan-born president.

I hope all these allegations against pan-blue figures meeting with the underworld are made with consideration of the fact that politicians across the entire political spectrum in Taiwan have connections to organized crime.

  13. Arty, reread what you wrote. Read it again. Then read it again. That is what I did before responding the first time. First of all, I thought you were referring to OJ since I originally was talking about him. And since nothing about OJ's case indicates Lee withheld evidence, naturally your response looks like a criticism of his handling of that case, to which your comment about ethics ties in. This after trying to decipher what you wrote in the first place.

So not to be b*tchy, but before you criticise my understanding of science, and my misunderstanding of what you wrote, which is natural seeing as how you wrote it, perhaps you should pay more attention to what you are writing when you are writing it rather than patronising others.

  14. So not to be b*tchy, but before you criticise my understanding of science

It is bad habit of mine. I like to test my students if they are up to date on the literatures. Sorry about that. You see I did mention Loony Phil in my first post. I guess you just don't know who I am referring to.

Btw, I am not criticizing your understanding of science. It just today's peer-reviewed system requires greater ethical standard for the system to work.
