To all,
Our meeting is set for Saturday, January 13, 9:30 am at Swensen's ( 81 Keelung Rd. Section 2 ) our regular place.
The speaker is Dr. Liu Xiao-lan of National Chengchi University (Genda)
She will be speaking on Land Economics or Spatial Development. Spatial Development--what's that you say?
Spatial Development is how governments plan and build on land;
What they built. Where they built it. and Why?
So if you wanted to know why the High Speed Rail followed the path it did; why they built Taoyuan International Airport (formerly CKS Airport) way outside the city, and any other big project or future project, Dr. Liu has the answers but does not promise they will always be rational.
If there is anything you wonder about why it hasn't been built, bring that question also. Or if you have some recommendations, why not?
Dr. Liu comes highly recommended by Emily, one of our regulars, so it promises to be an exciting morning.
As for next month, we will probably have Michael Hurst, Director of the Taiwan POW Camps Memorial Society.
Did you know that when Taiwan was under Japan there were 15 POW camps spaced around the island and that thousands of Allied prisoners spent anywhere from a couple of months to over 3 years here. It is another little known part of Taiwan's past. If anyone knows about POWs on Taiwan it is Mike--he even was awarded MBE (Member of the British Empire) by Prince Charles for his work on it. Check out www.powtaiwan.org on that.
On a side note a High School mainly for Taiwanese living in China (outside Shanghai) is looking for an English teacher to start immediately; one year contract or more; room and board (5 star hotel style) plus 5000 RMB a month; I anyone is interested let me know.
Jerome

[Taiwan]
I have taken one of Dr. Liu's classes at Chengchi University. She is an insightful woman and a good lecturer, very enlightening on topics such as land reform in Taiwan during the early 1950s.
