DPP Continues to Disappoint

I thought I'd take time out from my weariness with politics to point out something about...well...politics. The Taipei Times reports on the recent debates among DPP candidates for the Chairmanship:

The first, boisterous televised debate among the three candidates -- former Presidential Office secretary-general Yu Shyi-kun, Legislator Chai Trong-rong (蔡同榮) and former Changhua County commissioner Wong Chin-chu (翁金珠) -- was held last Saturday afternoon. In addition to elaborating on their campaign platforms, the three candidates criticized their opponents. A large proportion of the debate focused on defending or attacking Chen's leadership of the DPP.

The DPP is still focused on blaming Chen for all that has happened. It is becoming more and more apparent that the party is far more interested in attributing blame -- so long as none of it falls on any of the factions or their leaders -- than in evaluating the reasons for recent election outcomes. It wasn't Chen who lost the election, but DPP candidates at every level. No one seems ready to confront that fact, however.

  1. This is sad, but so predictable. It's too entrenched in the culture for an exception to made. Cars can never be moved until someone takes responsibilty for the fender bender. Remedial measures can never be taken until some government minister resigns, or CEO is fired. Someone has to carry the can back, or things cannot move forward.

  2. Depressing, isn't it?

Not quite true - Ma Ying-jeou consistently explains the local election results correctly, but I'm not sure that he's standing in this election :)

What does all this obsession with Chen say about ex-Chairman Su ... he had no influence on the DPP during his reign it would seem.

  3. Su?? Who is "Su"?

Seriously, the dude has vanished! Clever of him to resign so he wouldn't catch any heat. In fact, no one has even mentioned him.....
