So how can an independent nation vote on independence, when the nation was never ruled by anyone else?<br /><br />Maybe my understanding of the word independence is wrong, as I'm not a native English speaker, but the nearest examples to me would be Finland independence from Russian rule, or Norway's independence from Swedish rule.
