So, if you make your money in Germany and the USA, you will not be taxed here at all...because you will be taxed in Germany and the USA. OMG what a concept.

This is eminently fair, and seeing as how this Jim guy is not a Taiwan citizen, and is not working, and thus not getting any state bennies, what's the big deal?

Unless he's hiding other income from the IRS, which sounds like the more likely problem as he's worried about the IRS. But that is a US problem, not a Taiwan one.

Now, if he has kept Taiwan citizenship, its more complicated, and I am less sure footing - but I think he would pay taxes on money coming back into the country as regular income. I am not sure, though, because the same logical priniciple of territoriality is at stake.

In Jim's case the only problem is that he's rich, and he's KMT related, which impugns those riches pretty well. This raises hackles, especially on this blog. If we was a "true foreigner" who happened to be rich but moved to Taiwan for fun, there would be less complaining.

Again, the vast majority of countries use territorial tax systems, and its lame to claim that people who make money in Germany should have to pay again in Taiwan. That's the US system and its stupid.

Now, if somehow those trusts manage to pay zero taxes on US taxes and German property, we might be somewhere, but then why would Jim worry about the IRS is this was the case?

And Michael, if he made more than the US exclusion amount, probably would not like paying double taxes either. (I'm recalling him bitching about his water taxes.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10698887.post-63580237722105308202012-10-06T21:55:01.063+08:002012-10-06T21:55:01.063+08:00The Commonwealth (天下雜誌) article on higher ed shoul...The Commonwealth (天下雜誌) article on higher ed should be read by anyone considering an academic career in Taiwan. More power to the Taiwan Higher Ed Union.

Every college teacher knows the 5-year 評鑑 and the faculty promotion criteria are ludicrous. But Taiwanese academics have spent their whole lives conforming to similarly idiotic systems. Having secured a job, they say 沒有辦法 and go on producing meaningless "research," hosting meaningless conferences, etc. These are mostly good, intelligent people who care about their students, but they want that steady income after they retire, so they keep their heads down. Meanwhile the ambitious political types game the system, rise to the top of the bureaucracy, and nothing changes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10698887.post-13713454591080059542012-10-06T06:56:49.968+08:002012-10-06T06:56:49.968+08:00This is simply false.

Your article is a nice attempt to write something valuable on the issue, but it's obvious, that you are too anti-China and anti-GMT. Sorry to bring it to you, but it distracts from the few valid points you've made. All in all, the situation is not as bad as you would like it. I'm doing business with Korea and Taiwan, I prefer the latter. I also personally know many GMT economists and businessmen, who would respectfully disagree with your campaign.

Cheers!Simon Tuck, PhDhttp://www.linkedin.com/in/simontucknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10698887.post-9761928580417582572012-10-05T12:27:06.430+08:002012-10-05T12:27:06.430+08:00Wouldn't the KMT taxing capital gains and othe...Wouldn't the KMT taxing capital gains and other wealth-derived income constitute political seppuku?
