Other not so much.Robert R.https://www.blogger.com/profile/12956389352825464115noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10698887.post-32094267527448451522011-08-12T07:22:13.387+08:002011-08-12T07:22:13.387+08:00thanks a lot for the link to the bloomberg article...thanks a lot for the link to the bloomberg article! <br />i believe the situation is quite similar among german "sinologists". in general they tend to be very apologetic of the prc for various reasons, among them fear of not getting a visa or endangering cooperation and funding from china. i was shocked that there was not a single event at any department or an article by a chinese studies guy in 2009 commemorating the 20th anniversary of the tiananmen massacre, nothing on liu xiaobo and on the ai weiwei affairs. the largest daily in germany even wrote a piece on the "silence of the sinologists"... the critical attitude towards china of the quality german media is even critcised by the sinologists. they argue effectively only they understand china and thus could criticise it, what they of course don't do. worse is the growing dependency on chinese money either through the confucian institutes or sponsored professorships. the prestigious university of goettingen has a new chair in chinese studies and chinese language learning which is sponsored by the chinese government!!! the new head of chinese studies prof axel schneider (a selfdeclared friend of taiwan - he studied there, wrote books about it and his wife is from there, although i feel that he is maybe pro roc) has no problem with this but proudly welcomes the cooperation with the prc. good that people like holz or dikotter are still around.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10698887.post-49238175316342655962011-08-12T07:03:31.285+08:002011-08-12T07:03:31.285+08:00Let me guess....
