Fascinating to read through the details of the text. The analysis of the tribunal is impressively thorough. It was good to see that they did a full review of all relevant documents about the rocks / islands / reefs dating back to the 1800s and covering Dutch, French, British, and Japanese historical accounts in addition to the more recent scientific data.

Of all of them, I was curious about the direction of the Itu Aba / Taiping analysis: at one point it seems like it might be leaning to acknowledgement of an island considering the sustenance of the Japanese fishery company's operations. But then it backs off and notes that no one could or has ever lived there permanently, instead just using it as a temporary operating base whether for fishing, abortive attempts at guano extraction, or military use. None of those seems to qualify as a natural island where any human has ever chosen to live year-round without depending on external support.

Overall seems thorough and balanced. It doesn't seem to deny Taiwan's control of Taiping, but rules against any large EEZ applying.

For Taiwan, I keep waiting for Tsai to start repositioning on this issue to use it as leverage for more international recognition for Taiwan's own territory, its regional partnerships, its inclusion in UNCLOS and ultimately the UN.

Tsai is so impressive so far on many foreign relations fronts - it is hard for me to believe that she doesn't have something like this kind of long game in mind. He cabinet and party include many nitwits but she herself seems rock solid and thoughtfully strategic to me.
