Most of its people tend to emigrate to other part of China or Japan or US to get better opportunity. It is a convenient, but flawed, yardstick to use to determine the success of an economy.<br /><br />An analyst who wants to improve his or her reputation has only to note the things that would increase the GDP of a country. If the country itself is also interested in increasing GDP under the assumption that more is better, then the analyst can't lose. <br /><br />It is a lot more difficult to get excited about a claim that, when it comes to economic growth, quality is just as important if not more important than quantity. Improvements in quality are harder to measure, and can be more controversial, making it harder for poor analysts to pass themselves off as insightful.
