lemme guess - this must be something about sports. something "important" must have happened, right?

No, nothing "important." My Tigers have come out of 22 years of dormancy to actually reach the World Series.

You finally broke me, Michael; you choose a subject that impels me to post my first-ever blog comment: I am thrilled to discover that you're a Tigers fan. Yes!!! Restore the Roar!... October, 1968, the seventh game (afternoon, as all Series games were then): our teacher (fifth grade) wheeled in a TV for the last three innings. Still 0-0, Gibson and Lolich both still pitching, two outs in the top of the eighth. Cash singles. Horton singles, too. And then Curt Flood slips trying to catch up to Northrup's line drive. Both runners score on the triple, and next-up Freehan doubles Northrup home. Tigers win 4-1 against the single-season most dominant pitcher in major-league history. And don't even get me started on '84! May we have the Tigers and the Cards again. It beats an NY subway Series hands down.

P.S. To MJ Klein: Jimmy Cannon said "Sports are the toy department of life." True. We know. Go Bengals!!

What memories! Listening to the evening games after I had gone to bed on a transistor radio that I had hidden under my pillow so my parents wouldn't hear it...in the days of Al Kaline and Aurelio Rodriguez....when Mickey Lolich's baseball card was the Holy Grail..

OK, here's your pinch:
LIONS, LIONS, LIONS, LIONS, LIONS, LIONS, LIONS, LIONS, LIONS, LIONS!

Unless, of course, your loyalty is not geographic. In which case...

YANKEES $UCK, YANKEES $UCK, YANKEES $UCK, YANKEES $UCK!

Enjoy your pinch.

A year ago, Kenny Rogers was the biggest jerk in baseball for shoving a cameraman, while many observers thought the Tigers had overpaid for damaged goods in Magglio Ordonez. What a difference a year makes! Go Tigers!

Kevin, who is Jimmy Cannon? one thing i really love about Taiwan is that no one ever asks me anything about sports, so i don't have to explain why i don't know a single thing about any of them. btw, Rico Petrocelli is a friend of mine, but we do not talk about baseball.... sports are just not my thing, man.

Michael - are you a fellow Michigander?

It is shameful that intelligent men such as yourselves would waste time talking about trivialities such as baseball. Especially when there are such pressing matters in the world to discuss:

Kramnik beat Topalov in sudden death! With the Slav defense in the last game! And Topalov totally could have gotten a draw, but then he blundered on move 44! And then the position was hopeless and I can't believe it and he had to resign and I bet the Russians were using mind control rays or something!

Try this web address, MJ, for stuff on the great Jimmy Cannon:

There are times I find sports incredibly tedious and just can't get into following them at all. And it boggles my mind that people actually watch golf on TV, or even more unimaginable, go to tournaments and stand around in the gallery. Rico Petrocelli was a great player.
